Entertaiment is a form of recreation, relaxation and distraction from the stressors of everyday life. It can include anything from a clown at a birthday party to a stadium rock concert. It can be an artistic expression (as in the works of Shakespeare), a means to achieve emotional or aesthetic effect, or even a way to teach children social skills. Entertainment can cross multiple media: the story of Scheherazade has been portrayed in operas, orchestral works by Rimsky-Korsakov and Ravel, films and innovative video games. It can also be used to promote a company or an event. The word “entertainment” is derived from the Medieval Latin intertenere, based on the Indo-European root tenere, meaning to hold inside.
